Inspired by the same childhood memory of growing up surrounded by gourds, Gualeng No. 2 carries forward the organic, intuitive shaping of its larger sibling—but in a more compact, espresso-sized form. The slight indents and asymmetry are formed by hand, echoing the irregularity of nature and the comfort of memory. Gualeng No. 2 is thoughtfully designed for everyday use, holding up to 240ml — ideal for pour-overs, long blacks, or lattes. Each piece is hand-thrown and formed by Chinese ceramic artist Yu Lei, embracing irregularity and touch as central elements of the design.

Available in three earthy finishes:

• White exterior, yellow-speckled interior – bright and sun-warmed

• Black exterior, white interior – bold contrast and rustic elegance

• Brown exterior, white interior – grounded and earthy with a quiet warmth

Crafted from porcelain or iron-rich clay with mineral glaze, and fired at 1250°C in Yu Lei’s studio in Southern China.

Each piece comes with an official artist authentication card and is exclusive to Neowave.

The Artist Behind the Craft

GENYU （艮余） is an artistic ceramics brand founded by the contemporary Chinese ceramicist Yu Lei. Born in rural Hunan, Yu Lei’s affinity with pottery began in childhood, playing with mud in the fields. After graduating from Beijing University of Technology with a degree in Art and Design, he moved to Jingdezhen, the historical heart of Chinese ceramics, to master his craft.

In 2017, he established GENYU, later relocating his studio to Hangzhou. Yu Lei’s creations emphasize natural aesthetics and tactile experiences, using mineral-based glazes and expressive sculptural techniques. Each piece preserves subtle, spontaneous marks reflecting its handmade origin, offering collectors refined, high-end pottery that resonates deeply with nature's quiet beauty.

Neowave has collaborated with GENYU (艮余) and artist Yu Lei to exclusively bring his exquisite pottery works to audiences beyond China.
